Exhibition at Centennial Art Center Nashville
Nashville, TN — Metro Parks’ Centennial Art Center has announced the jury-selected artists for its Biennial of the Tennessee Craft—Midstate Chapter (formerly known as the Cumberland Valley Chapter of the Tennessee Association of Craft Artists or CV-TACA). The exhibit will include artwork by local artisans Brenda Stein (wood turning), Donna Rizzo (clay sculpture/raku), Doris Wasserman (abstract painting), Karen Pillans (encaustic wax), Kelly Kessler (clay sculpture), Martha Christian (hand-woven tapestry), Roy Overcast (pottery/clay), and Maria Miguel (sand painting). The show will open with an Artists’ Reception August 1, 2014 from 5-7pm and will remain on display through September 26, 2014. These eight artists were selected from dozens of entries by a jury comprised of two representatives from Nashville Arts Magazine, Sara Lee Burd (Executive Editor and Online Editor) and Paul Polycarpou (Editor and CEO). This Tennessee Craft—Midstate Biennial is a reflection of a long partnership between Centennial Art Center and Tennessee Craft in promoting the visibility and awareness of local craftsmen. Tennessee Craft, which was rebranded last year from its former moniker TACA, is well-known for its highly-anticipated craft fairs each spring and fall (traditionally held in Centennial Park). Tennessee Craft Executive Director, Teri Alea, explained some motivation behind the rebranding, “Throughout our culture we have seen a renewed interest in handcrafted, artisan work. With such support for today’s makers, we knew this was the perfect time to reintroduce ourselves as the connecting point for artists and the public. We are confident that our new look and increased dedication to Tennessee’s fine craft tradition will shine a spotlight on amazing talent across our state while growing the amount of direct support, high-profile events and educational opportunities we offer.” The rebranding also unites the organization’s six regional chapters (of which Tennessee Craft—Midstate is the largest). These chapters serve rural and urban areas alike across Tennessee to offer programs for area artists and residents. As champions of the “buy local” movement, their exhibitions, studio tours, holiday sales and workshops work collectively to raise awareness of craft across the state. This exhibit at Centennial Art Center will be on display for eight weeks prior to the Tennessee Craft Fall Fair being held in Centennial Park September 26-28, 2014. Exhibition Coordinator for Tennessee Craft—Midstate, Catherine McMurray says, “This Biennial at Centennial Art Center is special because it encourages local artists to participate who might not otherwise be able to display their artwork outdoors during the seasonal craft fairs due its fragility or exposure to the elements. This juried exhibit reflects the diverse range of talent present in our members.” The opening reception is free and the public is cordially invited to attend. The Biennial exhibit will remain on display through September 26, 2014. Centennial Art Center Gallery is free and open to the public. The exhibit is open August 1 – September 26, 2014. Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday 9am-5pm. For more information, call Centennial Art Center at (615) 862-8442, visit online: http://www.nashville.gov/cac or find them on...
